5 things to look for in an AI website builder

AI website builders are everywhere now, and from the outside they can look identical: type a prompt, get a site. But what happens after that first prompt is where they differ, and those differences decide whether you end up with a site you own and can grow, or one you're stuck fighting.

Here are five things worth checking before you commit to one.

1. How is the AI billed?

Most AI builders charge you for the tool and then again for the AI, through API keys or per-message fees that grow with every edit. That means the more you use it, the more it costs, and the bill is hard to predict.

The better model is simple: use an AI subscription you already pay for. If a builder can run on your existing ChatGPT or Claude plan, the AI is already paid for, and there's no second meter running.

2. Can you edit everything by hand?

A prompt gets you most of the way, but the last ten percent, the part that makes a site feel like yours, almost always needs a human hand. Ask whether you can select any element the AI made and change it directly: move it, restyle it, rewrite it, delete it.

If the answer is "re-prompt and hope," you don't really have control. You want AI that drafts, and a real editor that lets you finish.

3. Do you own what it builds?

Some platforms make it easy to build and very hard to leave. Your site lives in their system, in their format, and comes with you only if you start over somewhere else.

Look for clean, exportable code. If you can take your site and host it anywhere, you own it. If you can't, you're renting.

4. Is it a real design studio or just a chat box?

A conversation is a fine way to start a page. It's a poor way to run a whole website: a blog, a shop, forms, multiple pages, a consistent brand.

Check for the tools a site actually needs: a visual canvas, reusable components, a CMS for content, commerce if you sell, and publishing to your own domain. A chat box alone runs out of road quickly.

5. Is the pricing simple?

Usage-based pricing sounds fair until you're mid-project and watching a counter. Flat, predictable pricing lets you build without rationing.

Ask the plain questions: Is it one fee, or several? How many sites can I build? Are there charges that only appear once I'm committed?

Where CORE X9 lands

We built CORE X9 around these five answers. It runs on the ChatGPT or Claude subscription you already have, so there are no API keys or per-message fees. Everything the AI makes is an editable layer you control by hand. Your site exports as clean code, so there's no lock-in. It's a full design studio with a CMS, commerce and publishing, not a chat box. And it's one flat monthly fee with unlimited projects.

If those are the answers you're looking for, you can start building for free.
